Welcome to the Maryland-District of Columbia Society of Healthcare Risk Management!  MD-DC SHRM is an affiliate of ASHRM, the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management.  We share the ASHRM mission of advancing patient safety, reducing uncertainty, and maximizing value through management of risk across the healthcare enterprise.  Our membership represents a wide variety of organizations, including hospitals, physician practices, and long term care facilities, along with risk managers, defense counsel, insurers, patient safety and quality improvement professionals.

I am honored and grateful to serve as your MD-DC SHRM President for 2021 as we continue to adjust our sails to meet the needs of, and bring value to, our membership in the midst of a virtual world.

I would like to thank Past-President Heather Joyce-Byers, who led MD-DC SHRM through a very challenging and successful 2020 term.  Heather and the Board seamlessly transitioned into webinar education for our membership and hosted Educational sessions including “Navigating the Ever-Changing Claims Environment” and “Telemedicine Liability and Regulatory Compliance”.

I would also like to take a moment to welcome our new Members of the Board, Gregory Kirby (President Elect), Nancy Connelly (Director at Large), Stacy Meyer (Director at Large), Kaitlan Skrainar (Treasurer Elect), and Jacqueline Spielman (Nominating Committee Chair).

I would like to thank all of our long-standing sponsors.  We appreciate your commitment to our mission and efforts to provide quality education to Healthcare Risk Management professionals.  Your generosity and participation help to make our Educational sessions, Webinars and events possible. If you would like to learn more about sponsorship opportunities, please contact Stacy Meyer via the link on our Sponsorship page.

Our Committees are robust and support the greater mission of MD-DC SHRM.  Committees include Membership, Communication, Sponsorship, Education, By-Laws, Legislative, Nominating, and Finance.  Please consider joining this amazing group of professionals who work to enhance not only our Chapter, but our profession.  Do not miss this opportunity to network and be a part of the discussion as hospitals and health systems, risk managers and counsel work together to advance our mission.  If you are interested in joining a Committee, please reach out to me or to the Committee Chair.

The Education Committee has some exciting education programs planned for 2021.  Keep an eye out for correspondence with further registration details.  While we hope to have our September meeting in person, we are prepared to host it virtually if necessary.  We are grateful to Planet Depos for hosting our virtual Educational sessions.

I believe it is imperative for all of us to continue to network and learn from each other during this challenging time in healthcare.  If you are not already a member, I welcome you to consider joining today.

I look forward to the opportunity to serve you as President.

Thank you,
